▶ PLAY FREE NOWNo download · Phone or PC · 3–4 minutes per run

Omaha Beach 1944: The Longest Day is a free choice-based D-Day survival game you play right in your browser. Dawn, June 6, 1944, off the coast of Normandy. You are a rifleman of the fictional Baker Company — or a combat photographer going in with the first wave. At 06:30 bullets start hammering the landing-craft ramp. There is only one goal: not to defeat the enemy, but to live through the day.

How the day plays out

Facts such as the date, the place and the tide times follow real records, including the U.S. War Department's Omaha Beachhead (1945); the right answers come from survival lessons recorded at the time. A run takes 3–4 minutes.

  1. The run-in: seasickness, cold spray, amphibious tanks sinking in the waves. Pull the life belt up from your waist to your armpits? Set your pack buckles for a quick release? Peek over the side?
  2. 12 seconds at the ramp: 1.7 seconds to get down. Lt. Hale screams "Drop the ramp!" while the water is still deep. Go straight out the front, or over the side?
  3. Water and sand: dropping your gear and using the life belt in water over your head, chest-deep surf, then 200 yards of open sand. Hide behind the steel obstacles and the tide comes in.
  4. Under the shingle bank: when the whistle rises you have one or two seconds to hit the ground. Bangalore torpedoes, a dud shell, a wounded man, and a surrendering German soldier stepping out of the smoke.
  5. Up the bluff: follow the engineers' white tape in single file, take a shortcut, or head back to a departing landing craft?

Shell reactions and the radio

The heart of the war series is reacting to sound. A machine-gun line stitches across the water, a mortar whistle climbs, a gun on the bluff swings toward the bank. The screen turns red and you have one or two seconds. Your radio is an SCR-536 handie-talkie with channels for the company net, the beachmaster, destroyer fire support and the landing craft. Soak it in seawater and the battery and signal suffer; call a strongpoint's position on the fire-support channel and a destroyer answers.

Story mode, random mode and perks

Story is the run where the ramp is about to drop in front of a sandbar and the current pushes you east of your target sector. Random changes the sandbar, the current and when the path up the bluff opens. Every run gives your character a new name and a perk with its own special choices.

Same faces, a different era

The familiar faces of the Survival series return as people of 1944: blustering, frightened Sgt. Crowley; Ginny, the radio operator hugging her set; Head Nurse Doreen, looking after the wounded over the radio from a hospital ship; and Lenny, the translator and rumor mill. And this episode's villain — Lt. Hale (fictional), who orders the ramp down in deep water, keeps his men behind the obstacles and tries to slip away on a returning boat.

12 hidden missions

Each run secretly assigns three missions. They are not shown on screen; a single line tells you when you complete one, and the result screen reveals them. Examples: Life belt under the arms, Before you sink, Never stopped, Faster than the tide, The Geneva promise, Expose Lt. Hale, Call the destroyer.

10 tips to survive the game

  1. Stay below the gunwale in the boat. Don't look over the side.
  2. Life belt high, under the armpits. Inflated at the waist, it flips you over.
  3. Set your pack buckles for a quick release. In the water, seconds count.
  4. Go over the side, not out the front. The ramp is the line of fire.
  5. Don't let them drop you in deep water. Give the coxswain time to clear the sandbar.
  6. Out of your depth? Drop the gear first, then float on the belt and get your breath.
  7. Keep walking to cover. Behind obstacles and tanks come the tide and the shells.
  8. Hit the ground at the whistle. Don't lift your head.
  9. Treat a surrendering soldier humanely. That's the Geneva Convention.
  10. Climb inside the tape, in single file. The shortcut is mined.

FAQ

Is the Omaha Beach game free?

Yes. It's a free browser game with no payments, no ads and nothing to install. It runs on phones, tablets and PCs.

Are the unit and characters real?

No. The date, place and course of the battle — Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944 — follow historical records, but the player's unit (Baker Company), Lt. Hale and every other character are fictional.

Is it a shooting game?

No. The only goal is to survive. There is no score or kill count; results are survival and injuries only. Treating a surrendering or wounded enemy soldier humanely is the right choice.

Is it graphic?

There is no blood or depiction of bodies. Danger is shown with water spouts, sand bursts, smoke, screen shake and sound. You can switch jump scares to "mild" on the title screen.

How long is a run?

Usually 3–4 minutes. The hours under the shingle bank are compressed and run automatically, pausing only for events.

Why wear the life belt under the armpits?

The M1926 life belt of the time was meant to be worn high on the chest. Inflated low around the waist while carrying a heavy load, it could lift the legs and flip the upper body so the head went under.

How many survive by guessing?

In bot tests about 88% of players who choose at random fall. Choosing by the recorded lessons, everyone survives.

Are there other episodes?

Yes — the War series (London Blitz 1940, Midway 1942, Stalingrad 1942, Leyte 1944), plus the Distress and Disaster series.
